Signed 1958 Topps card of Vernon in Cleveland Indians colors
Sports card signed "Mickey Vernon". Color, 2½x3½. Topps card no. 233 with 1957 and lifetime stats on verso. ©Topps Chewing Gum. The front shows Vernon in Cleveland Indian colors; based on this and the stats printed on the card, it was probably printed in 1958. A four-decade player, the consistent, hardy Vernon (1918-2008, born James Barton Vernon in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania) set the major league record for most games played at first base (2,237). He set the American League mark for most lifetime assists (1,444) and collected 2,495 lifetime hits, an average of more than one per game. He led the AL in doubles in 1946, 1953 and 1954, and drove in 80 or more runs 11 times, with a high of 115 in 1953. Vernon managed the Washington Senators from 1961 through 40 games in 1963. Lightly toned and soiled. Signature is lightly smeared but legible. Ink transference, which touches signature. Otherwise in fine condition.
