Extremely rare signature from the Polish American pianist, written in black ink
Signature: "Miecyzslaw Munz", in black ink, 6¼x4½. Polish American pianist Miecyzslaw Munz (1900-1976) achieved most of his fame in the 1920's and 1930's, making his debut in Krakow at the age of 12. He played in Europe for most of his teenage years, traveling to the United States in his early twenties to continue his practices and performances, eventually making his home in the U.S. He continued to tour across Europe and masterfully played pieces from renowned artists such as Liszt, Brahm, Busoni, and Tausig, being praised for his perfect interpretations. One such occasion was an unexpected performance by Munz at a concert that was originally supposed to be given by pianist Ethel Leginska. When she did not appear on time, Munz volunteered to play instead, playing all the planned pieces much to the audience's delight. His popular career continued for many years until the 1940's, when a condition in his right hand ceased his playing, and he instead focused on teaching. Of the many pupils he taught, Munz's more notable ones include Emanuel Ax, Walter Hautzig, David Oei, Ann Schein, and Adolovni Acosta. Toned. Lightly soiled. Slight surface creases. Small paper remnant on bottom left corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
