Newspaper photograph signed: "Mike/Gartner" in blue felt. 3½x4½. Mike Gartner (b. 1959)
played 19 NHL seasons, ten of them with the Washington Capitals. The right winger was the
Capitals' Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player and fan-voted Most Promising Player
in 1980. The Capitals retired his jersey #11 in 2008. During the 1991-1992 season, while
playing for the New York Rangers, Gartner became the first NHL player to reach 500 goals,
500 assists and 1,000 points in the same season. He headed the NHL Players Association
from 1996 to 1998. Gartner is one of the few Hockey Hall of Fame inductees to secure that
honor without ever playing in a Stanley Cup final or being named to an All-Star team. Lightly
