MIKE GRAVEL
Youthful photo taken on an airport runway
Photograph inscribed and signed: "Doug:/Best Wishes/Mike Gravel". B/w, 8x10. Maurice Robert "MIKE" GRAVEL (b. 1930) was a real estate developer and state legislator, Speaker of the Alaska House for one term, before winning election to the US Senate (1969-1981). In the Senate, which he described as a "tank of barricudas", Gravel was admired by his friends as a brave maverick and disparaged by his foes as a loose cannon. He fought to end the draft and the Vietnam War, and entered the entirety of the Pentagon Papers into the minutes of a Senate subcommittee hearing to evade an injunction imposed on newspapers. His success in winning Senate approval of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline helped him win re-election in 1974, but he lost the Democratic Primary in 1980, having - in his own words alienated "almost every constituency in Alaska." After a decade in the political wilderness - struggling with bankruptcy and divorce - Gravel re-emerged in the 1990s as the foremost advocate of a constitutional amendment to authorize the ballot initiative and referendum at the federal level. He sought the Democratic Presidential nomination in 2008, running well to the left of front-runners Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, and then switched to the Libertarian Party. Gravel continues as a maverick and devil's advocate, praising WikiLeaks for disclosing secret US documents. Lightly creased. File holes at right edge. Tape stains on verso, no show through. Fine condition.
