MIKE SMITH
Color photo of thoroughbred jockey Mike Smith and Giacomo in the winner's circle at the 2005 Kentucky Derby
Photograph signed "Mike Smith". Blue ink notations on verso in unknown hand. Color, 9¾x7¾. According to the notations on this photo, the horse in this photo is Giacomo and was taken at the 2005 Kentucky Derby, which Smith and Giacomo won in a huge upset. Smith, born in Roswell, New Mexico in 1965, is a thoroughbred jockey who started racing at 11 and won his first licensed race in 16. Since then, he's set a record with 68 stakes wins in a year in 1994, including five on Horse of the Year Holy Bull. This record stood until 2003. He leads all active riders with 10 Breeder's Cup wins and has the third most wins of all time as of this biography. He also won the 1993 Preakness Stakes on Prairie Bayou and became the first American to win a European classic when he won the 1991 Irish Two Thousand Guineas on Fourstars Allstar. Smith also pulled off a spectacular upset win at the 2005 Kentucky Derby on Giacomo, resulting in a $102.60 payoff on a $2 ticket. But he's also taken some nasty spills along the way, including two in 1998, the first breaking his shoulder and the second breaking his back and laying him up in a body cast. Smith has earnings of $5.8 million with a win rate of 15 percent and an in-the-money rate of 36 percent. He was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 2003 and won the 2000 George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award, the highest peer award amongst professional jockeys. Lightly toned and creased. Signature has low contrast in places but is legible. Otherwise in fine condition.
