Primarily known for his work on the long-running CBS magazine series 60
Minutes (1968-2006), Mike Wallace (1918-2012) developed a reputation as
an inquisitorial interviewer, authoritative documentary narrator and powerful
investigative reporter. Wallace, who began his career as a Chicago newspaper
columnist, joined CBS News in 1951, remaining with the network until 1955
and then returning as a news correspondent in 1963. Wallace's early television
credits included Night Beat (1956-1957), The Mike Wallace
Interview (1957-1960), and the Peabody-winning Biography (1959-1961).
Wallace was no stranger to controversy: his 1972 he was sued by General
William Westmoreland for claiming in 1982 that the general had manipulated
Vietnam casualty figures; and he criticized his own network for delaying
broadcast of an exposé on the tobacco industry. His longevity, celebrity and
ability to land big interviews, however, made him one of the most important news
figures in the history of television. Wallace earned many awards, including
20 Emmy Awards (he received the Lifetime Achievement Emmy in
September 2003) and three Peabody Awards, and he was inducted into the
Television Academy Hall of Fame in 1991. He has also written a number of
books. In 2006, the year of his retirement, Wallace interviewed accused
steroid-using baseball star Roger Clemens and Iranian President Ahmadinejad.
