MILDRED DUNNOCK
A sweet letter from the actress to a class, saying that she is no artist, but that she has traced a drawing made by her young grandson for them to have. Includes a photocopy of the original and her tracing in blue ink
Autograph letter signed: "M. Dunnock", in blue ink, 1 page, 6x9. Accompanied by one photocopied sheet, one drawing on tracing paper, and one drawing on white paper (none signed by Dunnock). In full: "I can't draw - I thought this might amuse yours class. It's my tracing and an attempt to have a drawing made by my small grandson a long time ago - He called it "Nona" - Italian for grana ma - No I'm not Italian". Mildred Dunnock (1901-1991) played wife Linda Loman in Death of a Salesman three times: in the 1949 Broadway debut, in the 1951 film (which got her a Best Supporting Actress nomination) and in a TV re-make. Her soulful eyes made her a natural for playing spinster aunts and long-suffering wives and mothers. Dunnock was nominated again for an Oscar and a Golden Globe as Best Supporting Actress in Baby Doll (1956). Though never starring in a series, she was a very frequent presence on television, from the playhouses of the early 1950s to made for TV movies three decades later. She was the lady in a wheelchair pushed down the stairs to her death by psychopath Richard Widmark in Kiss of Death (1947). Normal mailing folds. Slightly toned. Faint pencil notes on top margin. Right edge irregular. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Ink notes (unknown hand) on verso of 'plane drawing'. Otherwise, fine condition.
