THE MILLS BROTHERS
Vintage sepia-toned photo of vocal group The Mills Brothers in white suits, signed by Herb Mills with their "Best Regards" in blue ink
Inscribed photograph signed "To Joe Dennon/Best Regards/Sincerely/The Mills Brothers" by Herb Mills. B/w sepia toned, 8x10 overall, 7¼x9¼ image, one surface, printed on cardstock. Stamped in black ink on verso: "Mills Brothers/Four Boys & A Guitar". Photo by Rockwell-O'Keefe, Inc. of New York, with photo credit stamp on verso in black ink. THE MILLS BROTHERS often had to include a note with their early recordings saying that the only instrument they had was a guitar. That's because the vocal group was so adept at imitating the sounds of trumpets, trombones and saxophones (a gimmick they reportedly came up with when one of them forgot his kazoo at an amateur contest). Even after the gimmick grew old, the band managed to switch to mainstream pop, becoming one of the most enduring oldies acts, recording more than 2,000 albums with total sales of over 50 million and performing in some form from the late 1920s until the death of Herbert Mills in 1989. The group consisted of real-life brothers John, Jr.(1910-1936) on bass and guitar; Herbert(1912-1989), tenor; Harry (1913-1982), baritone; and Donald (1915-1999), lead tenor. Father John, Sr. (1882-1967)took over bass duties after his namesake's death. Their hits included the early 1930s hits Tiger Rag and Dinah, the 1943 ballad Paper Doll, 1952's Glow Worm, a 1958 cover of the Silhouette's Get a Job and 1968's Cab Driver, their last hit. Lightly toned, creased and rippled. Parts of signature have love contrast but are legible. Pin holes in corners and top and bottom edges. Negative and printing errors were reproduced in photo. Rounded and worn corners. Otherwise in fine condition.
