Schmidt (1918-2017), who joined the Boston Bruins as a center in the last half of the
1936-1937 season, became a part of the formidable "Kraut Line" (also known as the
"Kitchener Kids") of the 1930s and 1940s. Schmidt played on two Stanley Cup Champion
Bruins teams (1939, 1941) before joining the Royal Canadian Air Force during WWII. He
returned to the Bruins after the war, winning the 1950 Art Ross Trophy as the NHL's leading
scorer and serving as team captain from 1950-1954. He then coached the Bruins from
1954-1966. Schmidt became the Bruins' General Manager in 1967, and during his tenure,
the Bruins won Stanley Cups in 1970 and 1972. Schmidt, who coached the expansion
Washington Capitals during the 1974-1975 season, soon returned to Boston and became a
good-will ambassador for the Bruins. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in
