Photograph Inscribed and Signed: "For John [Illegible], from Milton Babbitt 7/12/79". B/w 8x10. Milton Byron Babbitt (1916-2011) was an American composer. His musical talents were apparent at a very young age, playing the violin at the age of four and the clarinet and saxophone soon after. At thirteen he won a local songwriting contest. He attended the University of Pennsylvania to study mathematics but soon left to study music at New York University. There he became attracted to the composers of the Second Viennese School and wrote a number of articles on twelve tone music and combinatoriality. He joined Princeton University's music faculty in 1948 and in 1973 became a faculty member of the Julliard School in New York. At Julliard he taught composers such as Donald Martino, Paul Lansky and Stephen Sondheim. He became interested in electronic music and composed for both cotemporary and electronic music for many years. In 1982, the Pulitzer Prize board awarded a "special citation" to Milton Babbitt for his life's work as an American composer. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
