MILTON BERLE and ANNA SOSENKO
The future "Mr. Television" signs a 1946 contract with theatrical manager
Anna Sosenko to appear on Hildegarde's radio show.
Partly Printed DS: "Milton Berle" and "Anna
Sosenko", 1 page, 8½x11. New York, 1946 March 28. A business
manager and producer in an industry dominated by men, ANNA SOSENKO died on
June 9, 2000, four days before her 91st birthday, in her Manhattan apartment.
Miss Sosenko had been the manager of Hildegarde, one of the most celebrated
cabaret stars of the 1930s and 1940s. Miss Sosenko wrote the song, "Darling, Je
Vous Aime Beaucoup" for her and also created a hit radio talk show, The
Raleigh Room, for Hildegarde. Over the last quarter century, Miss Sosenko
put her vast knowledge of theatre and music to work, conceiving and producing
star-studded musical evenings that honored the greats of the theatre. A
congenial, outspoken and intense woman, Anna Sosenko probably knew more of the
great stars of the theatre of the last 60 years than anyone. This is MILTON
BERLE'S William Morris Agency contract, in which he agrees to appear on her
April 3, 1946 show from 8:30 PM to 9 PM, for $2000. Also signed by Berle's
agent. The success of Berle's first television series, The Texaco Star
Theater (1948-1953), proved that television could compete effectively with
radio, stage and screen as an entertainment medium. Lightly creased. Fine
condition.
