MILTON EISENHOWER
Milton Eisenhower signs an autograph document signed.
Autograph Document signed: "Milton S. Eisenhower", 3p, 7¼x10½. No place, no date. "Look" Magazine poll on the subject of "America's Most Urgent Problems". Signed on page 3. Eisenhower has in most cases declined to check the boxes provided, but has handwritten more detailed answers to each category of problem. In full: [International & Military] "The need here is to have those nations which really want peace to agree upon a total program for its achievement - and then for each to do its full share, even though its cost hurts."; [Political] "Each of these is a problem. I am most alarmed by the emotionalism and bitterness that have come into all political debate. Schisms get deeper and deeper. It is the test of statemen to find a point of creative compromise that gets good action."; [Economic] "We obviously should reduce all Federal expenditures possible, for the minimum needs of defense here and abroad threaten economic stability. In other words, we should drop non-essentials even to the point of austerity and concentrate on essentials. There's a fire to put out."; [Social: Here he has checked the categories of Organized crime and Juvenile delinquency, Ignorance of the social sciences [He as substituted the world "problems" and added a new subcategory, "more and better education at every level"; [Cultural: He has checked Inferior schools, replacing the first word with "inadequate", and substituted this note for Irresponsible newspapers: "must do a better job of informing people on all aspects of crucial problems"'; [Health: He has checked shortage of doctors, shortage of nurses, heart diseases, cancer and mental diseases.]; On the final page he has written: "I do not find it possible to express my views by checking the cryptic headlines. You had therefore better discard this. I've filled it out as best I could because [indecipherable] Cowles ought not to be able to say I threw it in the wastebasket." Milton EISENHOWER (1899-1985), the brother of President Eisenhower, served in the U.S. Foreign Service and the Agriculture department. In 1942, he directed the relocation of Japanese-Americans on the West Coast. Between 1943 and 1970, he was President of three universities: his alma mater Kansas State, Penn State, and Johns Hopkins. He served as an advisor to his brother, most importantly as special ambassador on Latin American affairs (1957-1960). He chaired the National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence (1968-1969). Gardner COWLES was the publisher of "Look" magazine, while his wife Fleur exercised great influence on its content. Slightly creased. Staple holes in upper left.
