Philatelic Envelope signed: "Milton S Eisenhower", 6½x3½. First Day Cover observing the 150th anniversary of the U.S. Capital, 3-cent
stamp affixed, postmarked Washington, D.C., April 20, 1950, FIRST
DAY OF ISSUE. Cachet is captioned: "National Capital Sesquicentennial:
Commemorating the establishment of the federal government in Washington, D.C.,
1800-1950. 'Statue of Freedom' modeled by Thomas Crawford placed in position on
Capitol dome, Dec. 1863". Milton Eisenhower (1899-1985),
the brother of President Eisenhower, served in the U.S. Foreign Service and
the Agriculture department. In 1942, he directed the relocation of
Japanese-Americans on the West Coast. Between 1943 and 1970, he was
President of three universities: his alma mater Kansas State, Penn State,
and Johns Hopkins. He served as an advisor to his brother, most importantly as
special ambassador on Latin American affairs (1957-1960). He chaired the
National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence (1968-1969). Typed
