MILTON EISENHOWER. Typed Letter signed: "Milton", 1p, 7¼x10½. On personal letterhead. No place, 1953 February 3. To James Melton, Westport, Connecticut. In full: "How good of you to send me that friendly telegram from my home state. Certainly you were fraternizing with some of my best friends when you were at the Kansas Day dinner in Topeka. I spoke at that particular dinner several years ago. Interestingly enough, your telegram reached me just before I sat down to listen to Ike's State of the Union talk. His talk is fresh in my mind and therefore I must say to you that I thought he did a statesmanlike job. I am sure you and all others who supported him were really very proud of him. One of the 'musts' is for me to bring you to Penn State. If, in the meantime, your travels about the country should bring you through Central Pennsylvania, please know that you have a standing invitation from Helen and me to come and stay with us. With very best wishes and warm regards." Milton Eisenhower (1899-1985), the brother of President Eisenhower, served in the U.S. Foreign Service and the Agriculture department. In 1942, he directed the relocation of Japanese-Americans on the West Coast. Between 1943 and 1970, he was President of three universities: his alma mater Kansas State, Penn State, and Johns Hopkins. He served as an advisor to his brother, most importantly as special ambassador on Latin American affairs (1957-1960). He chaired the National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence (1968-1969). Slightly creased. Pencil line drawn to highlight second paragraph. Horizontal fold passes through entire signature.
