MILTON SILLS
5½x9 image, in 3-piece pinstripe suit
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To 'Paratodos'/Sincerely/Milton
Sills". Sepia, 5½x9. Milton Sills (1882-1930) was a popular Broadway
star, appearing in a dozen shows there between 1908 and 1914. In the latter year
he made his film debut in The Pit, a smash hit which made him a star.
Sills was cast opposite many of the silent screen's leading ladies,
including Gloria Swanson, Viola Dana, Geraldine Farrar and Colleen Moore. His
version of The Sea Hawk (1924) has been compared favorably to Errol
Flynn's 1940 version. Shortly after making his last film, The Sea
Wolf (a talkie, 1930), Sills suffered a fatal heart attack while playing
tennis with his wife, actress Doris Kenyon. A book by Sills, Values: a
Philosophy of Human Needs, was published posthumously in 1932. Light wear to
left edge. No show through from mounting adhesive remnants on verso. Overall,
fine condition.
