MINNA GOMBELL
Handwritten letter thanking her fan club for a Christmas present
Autograph Letter signed: "Minna", 2 pages (front and verso), 4x6. North Hollywood, California, 1938 December 27. On stationery printed with her married name, "Minna G. Sefton," to Chaw Mank [a fan club president], Stauton, Illinois. Accompanied by original mailing envelope addressed in her hand. In full: "Dear Fans - Just a note for the moment to thank you for my sweet Xmas gift from you all, now I can be all dressed up when I step out evenings with my lovely new bag. Happy New Year to you all. May you all achieve your heart's desires this year!" Minna Gombell (1892-1973) appeared on stage as Winifred Lee from 1912. Returning to film, she made feature films for two decades, mostly for Fox. Gombell often played street-wise, tough-talking blondes. Her films included Bad Girls (1931), The Thin Man (1932), Slave Ship (1937), Boom Town (1940) and Pagan Love Song (1950). She reappeared in a TV production of Macbeth (as one of the witches) in 1961. As Minna Sefton, Gombell had more freedom to "step out evenings" than most wives. Her second husband, banker Joseph Sefton, drew up a legal "declaration of trust"(1933) which authorized his wife "to dine, dance and 'go places' with any eligible and unattached male of her selection between the hours of 12 noon and 2 a. m., without either party incurring those dangers which are supposed to follow such a transgression of the code conventional." Despite the flexibility implied in this letter, the Seftons eventually divorced, and Gombell married a third time - to stage director Myron Fagen. Mailing folds. Lightly toned. Corners creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
