MINNA GOMBELL
Smiling image, inscribed in person to collector Saul Goodman
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Saul/Best wishes/Minna
Gombell". B/w, 8x10. On verso is an MGM promotional caption announcing
Gombell's pending appearance in The Thin Man and The Merry Widow.
Minna Gombell (1892-1973) appeared on stage as Winifred Lee from 1912.
Returning to film, she made feature films for two decades, mostly for Fox.
Gombell often played street-wise, tough-talking blondes. Her films included
Bad Girls (1931), Slave Ship (1937), Boom Town (1940) and
Pagan Love Song (1950). She reappeared in a TV production of
Macbeth (as one of the witches) in 1961. Saul Goodman (1919-2003),
a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the
evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other autograph seekers
offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity
then, to sign in fountain pen. Ink stamp and paper affixed on verso. Corner
and edges, worn, creased and toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
