MINNIE MADDERN FISKE
The actress, an animal welfare advocate, signs a quotation on this favorite theme.
Autograph Quotation signed: "Be kind to all/dumb animals -/Defend & protect them./M M Fiske". 3¼1¾. Minnie Maddern Fiske(1865-1932) was widely considered the finest American stage actress of the first quarter of the 20th century. She played a key role in promoting the works of Henrik Ibsen in the US, declaring that Ibsen's plays were more dramatically challenging than Shakespeare's. She made silent films of two of her best known stage plays, Tess of the D'Ubervilles and Vanity Fair, but considered herself better suited to stage works and made no more movies. She was married to playwright Harrison Grey Fiske, who directed most of her plays. She also assisted him with his writing. Fiske was a strong animal welfare advocate; Mark Twain wrote "A Horse's Tale" for her. Fine condition.
