Photograph Signed: "Mirella/Freni" in black felt tip. 8x10. B/w. Italian soprano Mirella Freni (1935-2020) born in Modena, Italy, is best known for her roles as Mimi in La Bohème and Cho-Cho-San in Madama Butterfly. After making her stage debut in Carmen in Modena in 1955, Freni first appeared in Covent Garden (as Nannetta in Falstaff) in 1961, debuted at La Scala (again as Nannetta) in 1962 and made her first appearance at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as Mimi in 1965. In addition to appearing on opera stages all over the world, the lyrical soprano has appeared in film versions of La Bohème (1965), Carmen (1967) and Otello (1973), TV versions of such operas as Madama Butterfly (1974), La Bohème (1975, 1988), Faust (1975, 1989), Otello (1976), Don Carlo (1984), Aida (1987) and Falstaff (1993), and she has sang on a number of recordings. Freni's later career highlights include singing in Barcelona with José Carreras and in Chicago with Placido Domingo. On May 15, 2005, she was honored by a gala concert at the Metropolitan Opera to celebrate her 70th birthday, 50th anniversary on the operatic stage and 40th anniversary of her debut at the Met.
