MIRIAM ALLEN de FORD. TLS: "Miriam Allen de Ford", 1p, 5½x8½. San Francisco, California, 1972 December 12. On sheet imprinted with her name and address to "Dear Mr. Allen" (original typed "Lewis" has been crossed out and "Allen" is written in de Ford's hand). In full: "I am afraid I am not one of the 'great, famous, and most admired and respected people' of my time, but I think your project is an interesting and worthwhile one. Thirty years ago I wrote a letter of this kind for an infant grandniece, and she has passed it on now to her own daughter. However, I am far too busy to do more than write this note, which at least will give you my autograph. Incidentally, as a member of Zero Population Growth, I hope you feel your family is now complete! I write under my maiden name, and my mother's maiden name was Allen, but there are so many Allens that probably we are not even distantly related. I was named for my maternal grandmother. Sincerely yours". De Ford has drawn the underline under "not". "Mrs. Maynard Shipley" typed under signature. With original stamped, typed mailing envelope. American journalist and author Miriam Allen de Ford (1888-1975) is best known as a writer of mystery fiction, although she won the 1961 Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for Best Fact Crime Book for The Overbury Affair, a mystery set during the time of James I of Britain. From 1949, she was regularly featured in "The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction", and de Ford, who had been a newspaper reporter, also wrote for "The Humanist". Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Minor tear at lower right blank corner (all paper intact). Lightly soiled at lower portion. Fine condition.
