MIRIAM HOPKINS
Studio photo for her appearance in These Three, inscribed in person to
collector Saul Goodman
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Saul/Miriam Hopkins". B/w, 8x10.
Promotional photo for the film These Three (1936). Collector's ink note
on verso dates signature March 16, 1936. Miriam Hopkins (1902-1972, born
Ellen Miriam Hopkins in Savannah, Georgia) was an American actress with over
50 movies and TV shows to her credit between 1928 and 1969. Hopkins trained
to be a ballerina, but a broken ankle turned her attention to acting. She
received her start on the stage, turning in 17 Broadway appearances between
1921 and 1959, more often than not playing Southern belles. She had
notable performances in 1933's Jezebel at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre and
her final Broadway appearance as a replacement for Jo Van Fleet in Look
Homeward Angel (1957-1959). She broke into film in the 1928 short The
Home Girl and turned memorable performances in Dr. Jekyll and Mr.
Hyde (1931) and Becky Sharp (1935). These Three featured a
love triangle, with Hopkins and Merle Oberon competing for the affection of Joel
McRae. Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued
his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many
celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman
presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen.
Diagonal crease in lower left corner. Scattered surface marks and
impressions. Otherwise, fine condition.
