Russian-born Auer (1905-1967) was cast in his early films as a sinister foreigner, until his comic talents were recognized in My Man Godfrey (1936), for which he was nominated for an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor. Other popular films featuring Auer include You Can't Take It With You (1938, in which he popularized the phrase, "Confidentially, it stinks!), Destry Rides Again (1939) and Hellzapoppin' (1941).
