In the year that he signed this contract, Auer appeared in the French films Tabarin, Le tombeur, Sacrée jeunesse and À Pied, à Cheval et en Spoutnik, which was released in the United States with the breathtakingly long-winded title A Dog, a Mouse and a Sputnik Hold Tight for the Satellite Sputnik. Other popular films featuring Auer include You Can't Take It With You (1938, in which he popularized the phrase, "Confidentially, it stinks!"), Destry Rides Again (1939) and Hellzapoppin' (1941).
