Photograph signed: "Mischa Elman/1955". B/w, 4x6¾ overall, image 3¾x5¼ (one surface). Imprinted caption at lower margin of photograph. Russian-born American violinist Mischa Elman (1891-1967), discovered by Hungarian violinist Leopold Auer, was considered a premier violinist at his debut in Berlin in 1904. Elman, who performed in the U.S. for the first time in 1908, settled in America in 1911 and became a U.S. citizen in 1923. His performances are remembered for their rich expressive tone, and his temperament was passionate, which was reflected in his playing. Elman's gramophone records sold two million copies, enhancing his popularity as a performer in his day. He celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of his first American tour with a concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Lightly creased at blank corners and margins. Surface creased (most not evident head-on), 2½-inch diagonal crease touches forehead. Otherwise, fine condition.
