MISCHA ELMAN
A 4x6 image of the violinist, signed in blue ink
Photograph signed: "Mischa Elman". B/w, 4x6 overall, image 3x4¾ (one surface). Photograph by H. Rand, Paris. Name imprinted at lower margin. Ink notes (unknown hand) on verso in Spanish. Loosely translated: "One of the greatest violinists of the century - Performing Schubert's 'Ave Maria' - 1940". Russian-born American violinist Mischa Elman (1891-1967), discovered by Hungarian violinist Leopold Auer, was considered a premier violinist at his debut in Berlin in 1904. Elman, who performed in the U.S. for the first time in 1908, settled in America in 1911 and became a U.S. citizen in 1923. His performances are remembered for their rich expressive tone, and his temperament was passionate, which was reflected in his playing. Elman's gramophone records sold two million copies, enhancing his popularity as a performer in his day. He celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of his first American tour with a concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Lightly creased. Margin in which Elman has signed is lightly soiled, minor glue stains (most not evident head-on) at image. Worn at edges and corners. Otherwise, fine condition.
