MONCURE D. CONWAY. Autograph Sentiment signed: "Faithfully yours/Moncure D. Conway", 4x2¼ slip. Born into a slave owning Virginia family, Moncure Conway (1832-1907) became a prominent abolitionist, even organizing the escape of his father's slaves during the Civil War. Early in the war, he was part of a delegation to the White House which urged upon President Lincoln the immediate abolition of slavery. A Unitarian minister, Conway was dismissed from two churches: first from one in Washington, D.C., for denouncing slavery, and later from one in Cincinnati for expressing unconventional views about Jesus and the Bible. He moved to England, where he finally found a congregation suited to his freethinking views. Fittingly, Conway's writings included a laudatory biography of Thomas Paine (1892). Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
