(1922-2015) was an American jazz singer and film actress who was the youngest of three
children. Her father, Leon, was a pianist and composer and her mother, Jessica, was a singer
with the Chicago Opera Company. Sheplayed leading roles in films of the 1950s, including
Excuse My Dust (1951), Affair with a Stranger(1953) and The D. I.(1957) and
supporting roles thereafter, including Airport '77 and '79. She has had recurring roles in TV
series, including Shotgun Slade (1959) and The Virginian (1965-1966). Also a singer, she
has released several recordings in the traditional pop and jazz genres. Lewis appeared on the
very first Ed Sullivan show (1948), and was the voice of Miss Chiquita Banana for 14 years.
In her 2011 memoir “Hollywood Through My Eyes”, Lewis revealed that actor and future U.S.
President Ronald Reagan had proposed to her but that she declined that marriage proposal.
She died on June 12, 2015 at her home in Weoodland Hills, California of natural causes.
