MONTE BLUE
Still from the 1934 film Student Tour, picturing Monte Blue with several others cast members; he has handwritten notes pointing out Betty Grable, Bruce Bennett, and Nelson Eddy. Extremely rare!
Annotated photograph signed: "[illegible]Marches On!/Monte Blue", B/w 9¾x7¾. The actor has penned several notes across the photograph pointing to certain actors: "Herman Brix/Now known as/"Bruce Bennett"", "Betty Grable was in this/group, just starting", "Nelson Eddy sing in this/production also!". Silent screen leading man and "talkies" character actor Monte Blue (1887-1963), who was sometimes billed G.M. (for Gerald Montgomery) Blue, began his career as a stuntman with the D.W. Griffith Studios before making his debut as an extra in The Birth of a Nation (1915). After his breakthrough role in Orphans of the Storm (1921), Blue starred opposite the most popular leading ladies of the day, including Gloria Swanson, Clara Bow and Norma Shearer. He made his last feature film in 1954. Blue also appeared on the small screen in two made-for-TV movies in 1966 and on a number of TV Western series from 1949 (The Lone Ranger) to 1960 (Rawhide). Pin holes in top margin. Slightly toned. Slightly soiled. Paper remnants on bottom edge. Corners lightly worn and creased. Light surface creases. Light surface scratches and dents (not seen head on). Ink stamps on verso. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
