Photograph of an advertisement for the Monterey International Pop Music Festival, the first rock festival with wide pre-publicity and heavy attendance. It successfully laid the blueprint for similar events in the future, including the larger Woodstock festival two years later. Held between June 16 and 18, 1967 at the Monterey County Fairgrounds in Monterey, California, the festival had a total attendance of 200,000, with a peak attendance of somewhere between 55,000 and 90,000 on June 18. The festival featured the first major American appearance of the Who and Jimi Hendrix as well as the first notable performances for Otis Redding and Janis Joplin. McDONALD's (b. 1942) Country Joe and the Fish and Quicksilver Messenger Service, which included DUNCAN (b. 1946) and FREIBERG (b. 1938), played the afternoon of June 17. BALIN (b. 1942) and SLICK (b. 1939) were with Jefferson Airplane, which was one of the last acts on June 17, the second day of the festival, followed by Booker T and the MGs, which included JONES (b. 1944), CROPPER (b. 1941), and DUNN (1941-2012). FURAY (b. 1944) and Buffalo Springfield played the evening of June 18, the last day of the festival, and the The Mamas and the Papas, with PHILLIPS (b. 1944), closed the event with Scott McKenzie and the song Dancing in the Streets. This photo is also signed by DONOVAN (b. 1946) (given name Donovan Phillip Leitch), who was scheduled to appear, but was denied entry to the United States because of a drug arrest the previous year. Lightly creased. Donovan's signature is lightly smeared in places and haloed, but legible. McDonald's signature is lightly smeared in places, but legible. Some signatures touch. Random ink stains and fingerprints. Light scratches on surface (not visible head-on). Otherwise, fine condition.
