The actor signs a letter on 5x8 Paramount Film Service letterhead.
Typed Letter signed: "Montgomery Clift", 1 page, 5x8. London, 1950 November 7. On letterhead of Paramount Film Service Ltd. to Mr. Brian Knight, Wimbledon Common. In full: "Thank you for your letter of the 26th October, which I have only just been able to answer owing to my very compact schedule for the Command Performance. I enclose an autographed photo of myself which I hope you will like." Photograph not present. Clift's "command performance" would have been before King George VI (1895-1952), the father of Queen Elizabeth II. In the year he signed this program, Clift appeared in one feature film, The Big Lift. The following year, he would give his Oscar-nominated performance in A Place in the Sun. Stage and screen actor Montgomery Clift (1920-1966), who had made his debut on Broadway at the age of 13, became an instant star after his film debut in 1948's Red River. Before making his last film, The Defector, in 1966, "Monty" was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actor in 1948 (The Search), 1951 (A Place in the Sun) and 1953 (From Here to Eternity). He was also nominated for the 1961 Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as witness Rudolph Peterson in Judgment at Nuremberg. Lightly creased. Show through of glue stains on verso touch the "t" of Clift and typed text (all legible). Tack head-size hole at lower left blank area to left of signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
