MONTY KELLY and GEORGE McLAIN
Handwritten notes to interview host George Sanders from bandleader Kelly and senior citizen advocate McLain
Autograph Notes signed: "To George,/Your lovely spouse, Helen/& your 2 darling children/Sandy & Susan -/I enjoyed the day/here so much. I'm/not going to wait to be/invited back. I'll just/barge over soon, try to/keep me out./Thanx a million times/for getting my recordings/before the public - I/know we are going to/become great friends./xxx/Monty Kelly/Jan. 24 '55", and on verso "Dear namesake/George,/It was a great pleasure/to have you and your/charming wife visit/the old folks headquarters./The California Institute/of Social Welfare deems/it a great pleasure to have/had you inspect our great/operation in behalf of the/needy of California/George McLain", 8x10. Newspaper photo of each signer affixed. American composer, arranger and conductor MONTY KELLY (1910-1971) led his own swing band and was a principal arranger for 101 Strings, a popular orchestra of the 1950s playing pop standards and show tunes. He composed the film score for Flight to Hong Kong (1956). GEORGE McLAIN was an advocate for the elderly, who repeatedly placed initiative items on the California ballot calling for a state pension system to supplement social security. McLain had a gift for organizing, especially for signature gathering, but only one of his ballot measures passed, and that was reversed the following year. His California Institute of Social Welfare was a private organization. Radio/TV host George Sanders, based in Los Angeles and later in Portland, collected autographs from guests on his show. Toned. Edges frayed from binding. Edges and corners worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
