Murphy (b. 1932) served in the U.S. House as a Democrat from the state of Illinois from
1971 to 1981. Murphy attended Northwestern University, earning his bachelor's degree in
1955. He then went on to receive his J.D. from the DePaul University School of Law (1962).
From 1955 to 1957, Murphy served in the Marine Corps. After returning stateside, he
became an administrative assistant to the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Chicago, serving in
that capacity from 1958 to 1961 until he was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1962. During the
1964 at-large elections Murphy was special attorney for Board of Election Commissioners
and throughout the 1968 milk strikes he represented the Chicago Dairymen's
Association. Elected to the 92nd Congress, Murphy continued to serve in the four Congresses
that followed. Following his retirement from Congress, Murphy involved himself in various
business ventures and served as a member of the Cook County Zoning Board of Appeals.
