Morton Gould (1913-1996), a composer, conductor, pianist, arranger and radio and film performer, received the 1995 Pulitzer Prize for Stringmusic, was awarded a Grammy for his recording of Ives First Symphony with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and was a 1994 Kennedy Center Honoree. Gould, who also served as President of ASCAP (1986-1994) integrated jazz, the blues, gospel, country and western, and folk influences into his music, which included Broadway scores (Billion Dollar Baby, 1945, and Arms and the Girl, 1950), film scores (Delightfully Dangerous, in which Gould and his orchestra appeared with Jane Powell and Ralph Bellamy, Cinerama Holiday and Windjammer), scores for television presentations (Holocaust and World War I, a CBS documentary) and ballet scores (Interplay, Fall River Legend, I'm Old Fashioned). Gould, who wrote his first composition (appropriately titled "Just Six") at the age of six, was also staff pianist for Radio City Music Hall when it first opened, and he conducted and arranged orchestral programs for WOR Mutual Radio, finding great success with his broadcasts that featured both classical and popular numbers.
