This first day cover commemorates the formation of the Alliance for Progress, an organization of American countries with the primary objectives to encourage economic development in Latin America. Postmarked Washington D.C., August 17, 1963. Five-cent postage stamp affixed. FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Moshe Arens (b. 1925) was a founding member of the Herut political party, a progenitor to the modern-day Likud party that continues to influence policy in the state of Israel. He served in the Knesset from 1973-1992 and again from 1999-2003. He was also appointed to three stints as Minister of Defense, the last coming in 1999. Before Arens' political career, he was an aeronautical engineer. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
