RICHARD "DICK" SELZER AKA MR. BLACKWELL
Blackwell signed this typed letter to Phyllis Diller, on letterhead inscribed with his photograph and signature, in 1979. In it, he compliments her act and thanks her for sending him photos and includes his new Los Angeles address.
Typed letter signed "Blackwell". 1 page, 8½x7, on letterhead imprinted with his photograph and "Mr. Blackwell" signature. March 26, 1979. Addressed to comedienne and actress Phyllis Diller. In full: "Dear Phyllis, You are a dear to send the photos. Loved your act, but you were so busy that night and I didn't want to intrude. My new home address...532 S. Irving Blvd., Los Angeles 90020. Best always,". Comedienne PHYLLIS DILLER (1917-2012), is known for her outrageous appearance, zany outfits, distinctive laugh and a stand-up act that featured frequent references to her fictional husband, "Fang", and zingers about her sex appeal and numerous plastic surgeries. She is considered a pioneer in female stand-up comedy. RICHARD SELZER (1922-2008, born in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, New York) was a former fashion designer who became better known as Mr. Blackwell, the acerbic fashion critic who compiled annual "10 Best Dressed" and "10 Worst Dressed" lists. He has appeared in films as Dick Selzer, but he is most often credited in the name of his character, Mr. Blackwell. Selzer, who designed Jayne Mansfield's wardrobe for the 1963 film Promises! Promises!, also designed the costumes, hosted and produced the 1968 TV special Mr. Blackwell Presents. Lightly toned and creased. Folded once and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
