Autograph Letter signed: "Mrs. Dickey" and "Bill Dickey" on a separate piece of paper that has been affixed to the letter. 1p, 8½x11. No place, 1990 August 20. To an unnamed recipient. In full: "Mr. Dickey has been unable to autograph due to his illness - He has not autographed any thing for dealers since June 1989- It is difficult to judge a baseball signature because of the curvature of the ball- I have classified these to the best of my ability - Sorry, we cannot supply or honor your request for autographs-". On lower left corner she has affixed a 2¾x1 piece of paper signed "Bill Dickey" underneath which she has written "This is a genuine Bill Dickey signature". Violet Arnold (Mrs. Dickey) was married to Bill Dickey on October 5, 1932. In her youth she was a showgirl who performed in Ziegfeld productions. The premier catcher of the late 1930s and early 1940s, the lefthanded-hitting Bill Dickey (1907-1993) was the soul of the Yankee dynasty bridging the Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio eras as a player, and the Mickey Mantle era as a coach. A key performer for the Yankees on eight American League pennant-winners and seven World Series championships, the Baseball Hall of Famer hit .313 over his 17-year career. Also, from 1947-1957, Dickey was a Yankee coach. Corners and edges gently worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
