MRS. SPEEDWELL MASSINGHAM
The activist and founder of the Council Against Bullfighting signed and wrote this handwritten letter to a supporter for the cause. She discusses gaining new supporters and protesting a film company that is filming a bullfighting event.
Autograph Letter Signed: “Speedwell Massingham/Honorary Secretary” in blue ink. Dated May 24, 1962. One page. Large 8x13 sheet featuring a unique letterhead on top third of page. Sent to Mrs. Pell. Features typed list of the Council's members as well as a depiction of a bull getting gored to death. Massingham is listed as the organization's founder and secretary on right side. Text In Full: At last the slow painter has sent our reprint of our note paper which I have waited for so that all our new Patrons should be on it. Here I send 40 sheets prepared by one of our helpers for any signitories with addresses to sign for you later to return to us. There is to be a wicked Bullfight against a Lion by a Film company in Spain on Friday. I have been all the week getting protests sent in. I sent a telegram to General Franco on Monday begging him to forbid it and 'glorify Spain in the eyes of the Civilized World.' So much is going on I am kept busy all day. I go to speak at Bristol tomorrow. I send my gratitude, blessings, and love to you”.The film production she refers to is probably David Wolper's Story of… (1962) episode that chronicles the training and experiences of famous matador Jaime Bravo. Mrs. Speedwell Massingham was the founder and major proponent of the Council Against Bullfighting, a British-based organization. Lightly toned. Minor tears along edges. Mailing crease. Otherwise, fine condition.
