MSTISLAV ROSTROPOVICH. Magazine Cover signed: "Mstislav Rostopovich". Cover of "Time" magazine, October 24, 1977 issue, depicting a painting of Rostropovich. Cover story: "The Magnificent Maestro". Mstislav Rostropovich (1927-2007) was born in Baku, then part of the Soviet Union and now the capital of Azerbaijan. A brilliant cellist who inspired new interest in the instrument, he became a close friend and associate of great Soviet composers, notably Sergei Prokofiev and later Dmitri Shostakovich. Rostropovich married and collaborated musically with the fine soprano vocalist, Galina Vishnevskaya. From the late 1960s, he also conducted, debuting with the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Rostropovich grew increasingly outspoken in his criticisms of Soviet human rights violations, publicly defending Nobel Prize-winning dissident novelist Aleksandr Solzenitsyn. In 1974, Rostropovich and Visnevskaya were virtually forced to leave the Soviet Union and were subsequently stripped of their citizenship (later restored by Gorbachev). In 1977, Rostropovich became Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra, Washington, D.C, a collaboration that lasted 20 years. Lightly creased. Minor paper remnants at lower left margin from removal of address label. Fine condition.
