MURRAY LANGSTON
B/w cartoon shown as The Unknown Comic, signed "The Unknown Comic Loves Las Vegas"
Printed Art Signed in Ink: "The/Unknown/Comic/Loves/Las Vegas-/Murray Langston". B/w, 8½x11 overall, 4¼x8¾ image, one surface, printed on cardstock. Captioned: "What/A/Bummer/The/Unknown/Comic". Langston was a regular performer at the Sahara in Las Vegas. Comedian Langston, born in 1945, is probably best known, or unknown, as The Unknown Comic, who performs comic routines with a paper bag over his head. Langston got his start on The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour (1971-1974), but didn't introduce The Unknown Comic until 1977, when he was broke and out of work. Langston premiered The Unknown Comic on The Gong Show in 1977, apparently with some reservations. He's said that he put the paper bag on his head because he was embarrassed to have his friends see him on The Gong Show. His act got him more work and briefly started a nationwide wave of imitators, like The Unknown Disk Jockey, The Unknown Used Car Salesman and even a college student who ran for class president, and won, as The Unknown Candidate. Langston managed to keep his identity as The Unknown Comic, well, unknown, for three years, even appearing as himself on TV and taking acting roles on TV and in movies during that time. The popularity of his act is one of those mystifying things that could have only happened in the 1970s; even Langston admitted in an interview: "The bag thing is really just one joke stretched out. After about 15 minutes it starts to get old. Plus I also start to suffocate." In all, he's had 20 acting roles since 1971, most recently as The Unknown Comic in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, the somewhat fanciful 2007 biopic of Gong Show host Chuck Barris. Lightly toned and creased. Light ink transference from cartoon but not signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
