First Day Cover signed: " Myrna Loy", 6½x3½. First Day Cover honoring George M. Cohan. Postmarked Providence, Rhode Island, July 3, 1978, 15-cent stamp affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Cachet is captioned: "Yankee Doodle Dandy, George M. Cohan, Performing Arts and Artists Series". Myrna Loy (1905-1993) was a dancer who entered films in the silent era (1925). In a film career that continued to 1980 (Just Tell Me What You Want), she frequently played strong, independent women. She co-starred with William Powell as husband and wife detectives in the six movies of The Thin Man series (1934-1947). Working through World War II with the Red Cross, she returned after the war in some of her strongest roles: The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948), and Cheaper By the Dozen (1950). She was awarded an honorary Oscar in 1991. Faint erasure below signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
