NAT PENDLETON
Vintage photo in pinstripe suit, inscribed in person to collector Saul Goodman
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Saul/Cordially/Nat Pendleton". B/w, 8x10. Collector's ink stamp on verso dates signature: April 7, 1937. Nathaniel Greene "Nat" Pendleton (1895-1967), an intercollegiate wrestling champ at Columbia, won a Silver Medal at the 1920 Olympic Games and then turned pro. In the 1930s, he began appearing in films, usually cast as a brawny dimwit. In Horse Feathers (1932), he portrayed a football player who kidnapped Chico Marx. In The Great Ziegfeld (1936), he played circus strong man Eugen Sandow. He had a recurring role as the ambulance driver in MGM's Dr. Kildare and Dr. Gillespie films, and played a police detective in two of the Thin Man films. His last year in film (1947) included a role in Scared to Death with Bela Lugosi. Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Corners worn and creased. Lightly toned around edges. Minor unknown stains near right edge. Otherwise, Fine condition.
