NATE SALSBURY
Signed the year before he joined "Buffalo Bill" Cody to produce the famous Wild West Show
Signature: "Nate Salisbury/Nov 1st 1881", 4½x3¼. Nathan "Nate" Salsbury (1846-1902) joined the Union Army as a drummer boy, later becoming a soldier with the 89th Illinois Infantry. After the war, he became an actor in various stock companies, including his own troupe, Salsbury's Troubadours. In 1882, he met legendary frontiersman "Buffalo Bill" Cody, already well known from Ned Buntline stories. Together they conceived the idea of Buffalo Bill's Wild West, an outdoor extravaganza featuring Cody, Annie Oakley, and a cast of up to 200 cowboys, soldiers, Indians and other performers. Salsbury proved to be a logistical genius, moving this entourage, with accompanying horses and equipment, from city to city and across the Atlantic, performing to large crowds and European royalty. Salsbury's other efforts included a Black America production with an African-American cast, which toured several cities in 1895. The Wild West Show outlived Salsbury, who died on Christmas Eve, 1902. Mounting residue on verso (no show through). Slightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
