Integral address leaf addressed by Dixon: "Honourable Tristam Burges/City of Washington" postmarked Norwich CT Dec. 8. Lightly creased, slightly soiled. Overall, fine condition. In part: "The inhabitants of the Eastern part of Connecticut, while noticing the examples of internal improvements in other Sections of the Country...are about presenting to Congress a memorial for the purpose of obtaining the assistance of Government in improving the navigation of the River Thames in that state...." Dixon adds in a postscript: "The object is to increase the Recovery by bring in deeper Cargoes of Molasses, as soon as the Channels of the River is deepened." Anti-Jacksonian TRISTAM BURGES (1770-1853) represented Rhode Island in Congress from 1825-1835. Whig Connecticut Congressman Noyes Barber represented eastern Connecticut in Congress from 1821-1835. On January 12, 1829, Barber presented a Memorial of the inhabitants of Norwich to Congress. Born in Connecticut, Whig NATHAN F. DIXON (1774-1842) served in the Rhode Island state House of Representatives (1813-1830) and the U.S. Senate (1839-1842). Lightly creased. Folds, not at signature. 1-inch separations at conjoining of leaves. ¼-inch separation at top and bottom of vertical fold. Overall, fine condition.
