The U.S. Senator from West Virginia signs a 7¼x3 piece of paper.
Signature: "N Goff/W.V", 7¼x3. Nathan Goff (1843-1920) was born in Clarksburg, Virginia. A graduate of the University of the City of New York, he enlisted with the Union Army in 1861 and became a major while serving with the Third Regiment of Virginia Volunteer Infantry. He was admitted to the bar in 1865 and commenced a law practice. He served as U.S. attorney for West Virginia (1868-1882), U.S. Secretary of the Navy (1881) and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Republican from West Virginia, serving from March 4, 1883 to March 3, 1889. After his time as a Congressman, Goff served as United States circuit judge for the fourth judicial circuit (1892-1913) and as a U.S. Senator of West Virginia from April 1 1913 to March 4, 1919. Lightly frayed at left edge. Lightly toned. Pencil note (unknown hand) at top right corner. Irregularly cut at edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
