Certification of two signatures on an indenture.
Autograph Document Signed: "N.K. Hall" as Commissioner of Deeds for Erie County, 1p, 10½x2¾. Erie County, New York, 1837 April 28. Removed from an indenture, but complete in itself. In part: "I hereby certify that on the 28th day of April 1837 before me came John B. Preston and that on the 12th day of April 1837 before me came Gilbert D. Palmer & that on the said days the said persons duly & severally acknowledged that they had executed the within Indenture...." Ten lines from the handwritten deed (not by Hall) are on verso. In 1828, when he was 18, Hall became a student in the law office of 28-year-old Millard Fillmore. In 1832, he became Fillmore's law partner. Hall served as a Whig in Congress (1847-1849) and as Fillmore's Postmaster General (1850-1852). On August 31, 1852,President Fillmore appointed Hall as U.S. District Judge for the Western District of New York. Hall served until his death in Buffalo on March 2, 1874, six days before Fillmore died, also in Buffalo. Glue remnants at edge on verso, tiny nick at upper horizontal fold, pin-head-size hole at blank cross fold, else fine condition.
