The Broadway star sends a requested photograph to Theatre World Founder Daniel Blum
Autograph note signed: "Nathaniel Frey", in blue ink, 5¼x3¼. May 16, 1951. In full: "Dear Mr. Blum - Enclosed is the photograph you requested [items not included]. Thank you so much for your interest. Sincerely". Actor Nathaniel Frey (1913-1970) performed heavily on Broadway between 1947 and 1968, debuting with a role in Barefoot Boy With Cheek (1947). Although starting off with minor roles, Frey's career quickly skyrocketed, starring in several plays including A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1951), Fiorello! (1959), and The Odd Couple (1965). However, it was his role as Smokey in Damn Yankees (1955) that would bring him to popularity, translating the character over to the film version in 1958. John A. Willis (1916-2010), active in Theatre World from the beginning, became its chief editor in 1965, holding that position until 2008. Willis is regarded as one of the foremost theatre and film historians of the 20th century. While producing (and presenting) the annual Theatre World Awards, Willis also served on the nominating committee for the Tony Awards. Theatre World, which received its own Tonyfor Excellence in Theatre in 2001, continues under chief editor Ben Hodges. DANIEL BLUM (1900-1964)founded Theatre World in 1945, serving as its chief editor until his death in 1964. Aided by Norman McDonald and John A. Willis (his successor as chief editor), Blum also conceived what would become the prestigious Theatre World Awards for promising new actors in the New York stage, Broadway and later off-Broadway as well. Lightly toned. Fine condition.
