Bank, payable to "Mr Nicoll" for $3.88. Poet, journalist and editor
Nathaniel Parker Willis (1806-1867), who founded the "New York Mirror" in
1829 and the successful "Home Journal" some years later, remained an editor
and journalist until his death. Known for his smooth, sentimental style,
Willis wrote both religious and secular poetry and won great popularity for his
prose and was admired by such literary luminaries as Walt Whitman and William
M. Thackeray. His works include Sacred Poems, Romance of
Travel, Pencillings (sic) by the Way, Out-Doors at Idlewild
(his country home), People I Have Met and "Poeros", published the year
he signed this check. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. ¼-inch
tear at upper edge, which is lightly soiled. Cut bank cancellation touches
payee's name, stray ink marks above the "N" and "P" of signature. Pinhead-size
stain at upper right blank margin. Overall, fine condition.
