his, "best wishes."
Photograph signed: "Best wishes,/Neal/Smith," in black felt tip. B/w, 8x10. Neal Smith's
(1920-2021) bomber plane was shot down by enemy forces during World War II. He
received a Purple Heart, 9 battles stars and the Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters for
his bravery. He attended University of Missouri and Syracuse University, earning a law
degree, before becoming a member of the United States House of Representatives in 1958 as a
Democrat. He served from 1959 to 1995, the longest serving Iowan in House of
Representatives in U.S. History. Corners lightly creased. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso.
