Character actor Ned Beatty (1937-2021)was nominated for the 1977 Best Supporting Actor Academy Awardfor Network (1976). Beatty, who began appearing on Broadway in his early 20s, was spotted by film director John Boorman, who cast him in his backwoods thriller, Deliverance (1972). He went on to play character roles in many films including Nashville (1975), All the President's Men (1976), Superman: The Movie (1978), Superman II (1980), The Big Easy (1987), and Where the Red Fern Grows (2003). Beatty also appeared in severalTV miniseries and made-for-TV movies, such as The Wool Cap (2004). Well known to television audiences for his role as Detective Stanley "The Big Man" Bolander (1993-1995) on Homicide: Life on the Street, Beatty also guest starred in a number of other TV series and even returned to Broadwayfor a revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (2003-2004).
