NED GARVER
1959 Topps card No. 471 showing the pitcher from the shoulders up in his Kansas City Athletics uniform.
Baseball Card signed: "Ned Garver" Color 3½x2½. Topps card No. 471 for 1959. Ned Garver, born Ned Franklin Garver in 1925, pitched in the bigs from 1948 to 1961, mostly for the St. Louis Browns, Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Athletics. Garver was an unusually strong batter for a pitcher, especially during his first four seasons in the majors. He hit a personal best batting average of .305 in 1951, the same year he was voted to the All-Star team. That, plus winning over a third of the last-place St. Louis Browns' games that year (20 in all) made him the highest paid player in Browns history (a whopping $25,000). He left the majors with a 129-157 record and 3.73 ERA with 18 shutouts and 881 strikeouts, as well as a .218 batting average with seven home runs and 21 RBIs knocked in. Slightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
